At 4:00 PM this afternoon, in St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis presided over a Public Ordinary Consistory for the creation of 21 new Cardinals.
Among the newly created Cardinals was Fr. Fabio Baggio, Under-Secretary of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development and Director General of the Laudato Si’ Higher Formation Centre.
At the beginning of the celebration, the first of the new Cardinals, His Eminence Cardinal Angelo Acerbi, Apostolic Nuncio, addressed the Holy Father on behalf of all the new Cardinals, offering expressions of homage and gratitude. Following a prayer and the reading of a passage from the Gospel according to Mark (10:32-45), the Holy Father delivered the homily.
The Pope then recited the formula for the creation of the new Cardinals and solemnly proclaimed their names.
The Rite continued with the profession of faith made by the new Cardinals before the People of God, followed by their oath of fidelity and obedience to Pope Francis and his successors.
In the order of their creation, the new Cardinals knelt before the Holy Father, who imposed upon them the zucchetto and the cardinal’s biretta, bestowed upon them the cardinal’s ring, and assigned each a church in Rome, presenting to them the Bull of creation as Cardinals and the assignment of their Title or Deaconry.
Fr. Fabio Baggio was assigned to the parish of St. Philip Neri at Pineta Sacchetti.
Following the delivery of the Bull of creation and the assignment of the Title or Deaconry, Pope Francis exchanged a sign of peace with each of the new Cardinals.
